Bhavnagar district is known for its cultural heritage. In 1888, Mahatama Gandhi studied at Shamaldas Arts College which is now run by Bhavnagar University. Bhavnagar University in Bhavnagar, Gujrat was established in 1978. The University is a member of The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and recognized by UGC and also accredited by NAAC. The University is an institute of international repute. The University is well equipped with all modern facilities.
The mission of Bhavnagar University is to execute and evolve developmental and educational programmes, social awareness programmes, faculty enrichment programmes, training programmes, extension, dissemination, preservation and development of the frontiers of knowledge in the interest of the community.
The University has also started several self finance courses in its post graduate departments for post graduate degrees. Since its inception, the university has been imparting quality education in wide- ranging disciplines such as Science, Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Medicine, Management, Rural Studies and Law stream. Presently, the university offers its programmes through its 20 Post Graduate Departments and 4 Recognized Institutes.
